On September 17th, I had the honor of attending the Vietnam Best Sommelier in French Wines 2025 competition as a guest at Mai House Saigon Hotel. The event drew significant attention from wine professionals and enthusiasts across the country.

Organized annually by the French Ministry of Agriculture under the Taste France campaign, the competition aims to promote French gastronomy, culture, and especially French wine to the world.

This year’s competition featured an international panel of judges and contestants representing various regions of Vietnam. Before reaching the finals, participants went through a series of rigorous qualifying rounds designed to test their all-around expertise. In the final stage, they were challenged across multiple categories — from wine and beverage knowledge, cheese pairing, and blind tasting to fine-dining service techniques.

Recognized as one of the most prestigious and professional competitions for sommeliers in Vietnam, the event plays an important role in elevating the profile of the sommelier profession — still relatively new but gaining increasing respect and recognition in the country’s F&B industry.

This year’s champion, Nguyễn Hữu Phát, received a special prize — a study trip to visit renowned wineries across France, offering a valuable opportunity to deepen his understanding of French wine and culture.

Competitions like this are not only a platform to honor skill and excellence but also an opportunity to connect, learn, and inspire within the sommelier community — celebrating those who bring the art of wine and hospitality to life, one glass at a time.
