Philosophy has never been a part of my life. I always thought that such profound knowledge was too abstract and distant, not suited for someone like me who lives a simple, uncomplicated life. However, “Stoicism” has provided me with an understanding of a lifestyle I have long been searching for.
Stoicism is a school of philosophy that emerged in Athens around the 3rd century BC. It occupies a middle ground between Cyrenaicism, which advocates for a life of pleasure and experience, and Cynicism, which promotes ascetic living. Stoicism finds its place in the middle, encouraging the enjoyment of life’s good things while also advocating for occasional pauses to reflect on what life offers.
The Stoic perspective holds that our suffering arises from our misinterpretation of problems. “Stoicism” does not imply strictness or austerity. On the contrary, this philosophy suggests that to achieve happiness, we need to live in harmony with human nature and the world.
Stoicism posits that there is nothing wrong with enjoying the good things life has to offer, as long as we do so with caution. Specifically, we must be ready to relinquish these good things without regret if our circumstances change.
